Copper-Nickel Ring Type Joint (RTJ) gaskets are solid metallic sealing rings designed to seat into a precision-machined groove on RTJ flange faces, creating an exceptionally high-integrity metal-to-metal seal. Copper-Nickel Spiral Wound gaskets are semi-metallic sealing elements constructed by spirally winding a thin Cu-Ni metallic strip alternately with a soft filler material — typically flexible graphite or PTFE — to form a robust, resilient sealing element. The spiral winding creates alternating metal and filler layers that compress under bolt load, accommodating surface irregularities, bolt relaxation, and cyclic pressure and temperature variations.

Copper-Nickel Corrugated Metal gaskets are manufactured by forming a Cu-Ni sheet into a series of concentric corrugations — creating multiple raised contact ridges across the gasket face. When compressed under bolt load, these ridges bite into the flange surface and deform slightly, creating multiple independent sealing lines that significantly enhance leak tightness compared to a flat gasket of the same material.

4. Metal Jacketed Gaskets — Copper-Nickel

Flexible Soft-Fill Sealing with Cu-Ni Metal Protection for Non-Standard & Aged Flanges

Copper-Nickel Metal Jacketed gaskets consist of a soft, compressible filler material — typically ceramic fibre, flexible graphite, asbestos-free compressed fibre sheet, or PTFE — completely enclosed within a formed Cu-Ni metal jacket. The outer Cu-Ni jacket provides mechanical protection to the filler, resists the corrosive process fluid and environment, and gives the gasket its structural rigidity and dimensional stability.

Metal Jacketed gaskets in Copper-Nickel are particularly well-suited for heat exchanger channel covers, pressure vessel manway covers, and large-diameter flanges where surface finish may not be ideal.

Copper-Nickel Lens Ring gaskets are precision-machined solid metal sealing rings with a distinctive convex spherical (lens-shaped) cross-section profile. Cu-Ni 90/10 (UNS C70600) contains 10% nickel and offers excellent seawater corrosion resistance, biofouling resistance, and good mechanical properties — making it the most widely used grade for standard marine and offshore sealing applications at a relatively economical cost. Cu-Ni 70/30 (UNS C71500) contains 30% nickel, delivering higher tensile strength, better resistance to high-velocity seawater and erosion-corrosion, and an extended service temperature up to 400°C. Specify 70/30 for more demanding operating conditions, higher pressure service, or elevated temperature environments.
For offshore wellhead and subsea pipeline applications, Ring Type Joint (RTJ) gaskets — specifically Octagonal Ring profiles — in Cu-Ni 70/30 are the standard specification. RTJ gaskets provide a high-integrity metal-to-metal seal that is resistant to blowout under extreme pressure and are the mandated gasket type for API 6A wellhead flanges.
